THE SPORTY ADVENTURE

high-protein foods for faster muscle recovery

Taking part in the 4Days Marches is very taxing on the human body. Walking 30km, 40km, or 50km every day for four days straight is hard work and your leg muscles are constantly stretching and contracting. Physical effort such as a long walk leads to tiny tears in leg muscles (muscle strain). These muscle tears release certain substances into the blood and give you that feeling of aching muscles. The body then starts to repair these tears, which will ultimately make the muscles stronger. It is important that you train properly for the 4Days Marches to make your muscles as strong as possible.

This means that you need to recover well from muscles strains. Recovering from physical exertion requires fluids, rest, and food. When it comes to the food part, proteins are essential.

The Physiology department at Radboud University Medical Centre does a lot of research into muscle strain and the effect that protein has on recovery. As part of their ongoing research, they will be selling tasty high-protein smoothies and wraps at De Wedren to help your muscles recover faster. Researchers from Radboud University Medical Centre will subsequently measure the effect of these special 4Days Marches smoothies and wraps by asking people to fill in a questionnaire.

Radboud University Medical Centre is convinced of the positive effect of these smoothies and wraps! All walkers can fill in the questionnaire in Dutch, regardless of whether or not they bought a smoothie or wrap.

The filled-in questionnaires will help Radboud University Medical Centre in finding ways to raise awareness of the importance of a healthy diet when recovering after physical exertion.
