THE 4DAYS MARCHES FEELING
Official Playlist
Nijmeegse 4Daagse
Henry van Houten (59) from Utrecht is the man behind the official Spotify playlist of the 4Days Marches.
When Henry took part in the 4Days Marches for the first time in 2017, he was immediately sold. ‘The atmosphere, the stories along the way and the people behind the event are fantastic.’ Last year, Henry spoke to the 4Days Marches Programming, Entertainment & Music (PEM) service. ‘I was then keen to put together the ultimate 4Days Marches playlist in collaboration with the PEM.’
How do you compile such a playlist? ‘I asked people on Facebook groups what real 4Days Marches music is and I got tonnes of responses.’ Okay, but then do you add all the suggestions to the playlist? ‘No, definitely not, only songs that evoke a certain feeling. Anyone who has taken part in the 4Days Marches will recognise that feeling.’
The Official Playlist includes many music genres, like brass band music, military marches, pop music from many countries (and in many languages) and traditional Dutch music. ‘I put a lot of thought into the order, with calm songs alternating with powerful pieces.’
Music connects people and generates a sense of togetherness. ‘This playlist does that too. It invigorates, and it’s for people of all ages – just like the 4Days Marches.’ And when the going gets tough it gives the walkers a boost.
Are there any songs that Henry is tired of hearing? ‘The song Links Rechts by Snollebollekes: I deliberately left that off the playlist, haha! You hear that way too often along the routes.’ And his favourite? ‘I’m Gonna Be (500 miles) by The Proclaimers. Now that’s what I call a real 4Days Marches song! It’s got a great beat, it’s all about taking steps, and it makes me happy. And along the way everyone sings along loudly!’
