Commemoration and rememberance
Commemoration in Groesbeek
On Thursday, when the route normally leads along the Canadian War Cemetery, we take a moment to commemorate the soldiers who have given their lives for the liberation of the Netherlands in the Second World War. On Monday, a smaller version of the commemoration took place in Groesbeek. .
Sunset March
Monday evening, the boards of Stichting DE 4DAAGSE and the Vierdaagsefeesten walked the Sunset March, together with mayor of Nijmegen Hubert Bruls.
Every day after sunset, 48 pairs of street lights are lit up on the Oversteek city bridge. This artwork is called Lights Crossing and is a tribute to the 48 American soldiers who lost their lives during the Second World War during the Waalcrossing, part of freedom operation Market Garden. Since 2014, at least one war veteran has walked across the bridge at the pace of enlightenment every day.
#fourdaysmarchesmemory
In a normal year, thousands of participants would gather on the Wedren today for the second day of signing in at the Wedren. For some a mandatory formality, for many a vital part of the Four Days Marches experience. When the wristband is on, the marches can begin!
